How the maths works
The SMS standard (GSM 03.38) has two encodings. GSM-7 covers basic Latin characters at 160 per segment — but nine characters (€, [, ], { and } among them) count double. Anything outside GSM-7 — emojis, Chinese, Arabic, «guillemets» — forces the whole message into UCS-2, where a segment holds only 70 characters.
Messages beyond one segment are split into parts with an invisible header (UDH) that shrinks capacity to 153/67 characters per part — and every part is billed as its own SMS. The phone stitches them back together nicely; your bill does not.
